A Few Words

(Emily Singleton)
2006
Emily Singleton
In a hospital waiting room, surrounded by the noise,
the chatter seems to fade away, when you hear the doctor’s voice.
“We’ve done all we can for him, it won’t be very long.
Better say goodbye, your daddy’s almost gone.”

He’d been your friend for years, though you hadn’t seen him much.
Only in the last few months, had you really kept in touch.
When the phone call came, just to make you aware,
his sudden death was more than you could bear.

CHORUS
The tables turn on the thin side of a dime.
It happens when you think it’s finally your time.
Life, it changes in the blinking of an eye,
and all that it takes is a few words.
All that it takes is a few words.

Living day by day, just wandering through life.
Sometimes you feel your only purpose is to be the perfect wife.
It came as a surprise, and it hit you with such force,
when he told you that he wanted a divorce.

CHORUS

You sacrificed so much, many good times that you missed,
Family always next in line, your job would top the list.
Retirement was a perfect plan, wait a few short years,
The word “downsize” is still ringing in your ears.

CHORUS
