Shadow of a Mountain
(Emily Singleton)
2006
Emily Singleton
In the shadow of a mountain, a lonely cabin stands,
a young girl steps up on the porch, and there, with shaking hands,
before she can knock on the door, a square of light falls on the floor,
an old woman’s voice, bids her to come in.
CHORUS
An old woman who is gifted with the sight,
a young woman seeking guidance in the night,
the old woman knows she’ll not heed her advice,
the young woman leaves and never thinks twice.
Until one day when she realized, what the old one prophesied,
had come to pass, but, then at last, the young one had grown old.
Now in that mountain’s shadow with many years gone by,
a woman now grown older remembers with a sigh,
steps up on the porch again, if only she had listened then.
Compelled that in this cabin, she would now reside.
CHORUS
In darkness dreams would haunt her, of other people’s lives,
People came to taunt her, demand the future from her eyes,
The gift of sight, passed on to her, was not a blessing -- but a curse,
She knew noone would listen and refused to prophesy.
CHORUS
